Antony Curtis, Mr Gay Wexford on the Quay in Wexford

Ms Gay Wexford 2011 • Valerie Doyle

Last year we had two great candidates representing North & South County Wexford.

Our Mr Gay Wexford 2011/ 12 was Anthony Curtis aged 23, from Courtown Gorey. Anthony learned a lot through his participation in Mr Gay Wexford and the subsequent Mr Gay Ireland event in Dublin. Antony spoke on the development of the Gay Youth Drop in in Gorey and made many new friends during his participation.

Ms Gay Wexford 2011 Valerie Doyle, aged 42 hailing from Duncormick represented County Wexford in Limerick at the Ms Gay Ireland 2011 held during the Limerick Gay Pride Festival. Valerie spoke out for professional carers,  expressed the importance of being themselves and requested that people be true to themselves.

Both Wexford representitives found the activities & events, excellent unique experience. Great fun was had by all.

* This is not a ‘Gay Wexford’ group event & the title Mr Gay Wexford is a Trademark owned by the Mr Gay Ireland events.
**After expenses are covered.

LGBT parenting is when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are parents to one or more children.

This can include same-sex couples where one or both are LGBT, raise children together, either through adoption, fostering, surrogacy, donor-insemination, or bringing children into the partnership from a previous relationship.

This can also include single people who are parenting and to a lesser extent sometimes refers to issues where the children are LGBT.

In the United States a third of lesbian couples, and nearly a quarter of gay couples, fulfill this role, raising over a quarter of a million children. All major agencies concerned with child-welfare agree that evidence shows that in terms of childrens’ outcomes, lesbian and gay parents are as suitable as parents who are in heterosexual marriages.

Many LGBT people are parents through various means including current or former relationships, adoption, donor insemination, and surrogacy; LGBT people are eligible to act as foster carers in some countries (such as the UK). In the 2000 U.S. Census, 33 percent of female same-sex couple households and 22 percent of male same-sex couple households reported at least one child under eighteen living in their home.

A lesbian or gay man may have children within a mixed-orientation marriage either because of a fear of discrimination, to manage Ego-dystonic sexual orientation, affection or love, desire for family, or spiritual reasons.  Some children do not know they have an LGB parent; coming out issues vary and some parents may never come out to their children.

LGBT parenting in general, adoption by LGBT couples in particular, are issues of ongoing political controversy in many Western countries, often seen as part of culture wars between conservatives and social liberals. In January 2008, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that same-sex couples have the right to adopt a child. In the U.S., LGB people can legally adopt in all states except for Florida.[2009] Because of these issues parents often choose to stay closeted in various ways.

The front cover is the beautiful view of Brownstown Head from the Beach at Tramore, there is also a nice profile of the” back of me” (something that many people like to see).

The launch is in Bishops Palace (across the road from Waterford Crystal Showrooms) a beautiful location for such a special book. Canapes will substitute Blaas and scallops, and wine will substitute Large Bottles of Guinness. We will have some Trad music from our very talented members, sure what else would ye want. Touching the Surface: Trans Voices in Ireland Launch photo by Joan O’Connell • Gaelick.com

The book has submissions from people who identify across the entire gender spectrum, and will be an invaluable resource for trans* people all over Ireland.  Touching the Surface contains poetry, photographs, and narratives about the trans* experience, as well as examples of art work and drawings.

“We had a fantastic response to our call for submissions,” said Orlaith O’Sullivan, Communications Officer for TENI. “We received entries from a great diversity of ages and gender identities across Ireland. Portrait photographs, poetry, short stories, memoirs and artworks – the collection reflects the personal, political and creative spheres of trans people across the country.”

For the publication, TENI even received a submission from as far afield as Russia, from a young trans man whose visit to Ireland had been an inspiration to him. TENI also worked with BelongTo’s IndividualiTy group, whose members submitted poetry, stories, images and thoughts on identity and questioning gender.

“From well-known figures like Lydia Foy and Panti to anonymous voices from small rural communities, the book marks the wealth of trans experiences in Ireland,” said O’Sullivan. “It is a beautiful, funny, poignant read. We at TENI hope that it will raise awareness – and a smile.” by Gaire.com: Book launch
